The purpose of developmental feedback is to address issues with theme(s), plot (including continuity), structure, pace, character development, etc. and to serve as a guide as you write your next draft. Developmental Editing Package


$.03 - $.07 per word, determined upon evaluation

Minimum 5,000 words.

  • Thorough readthrough of manuscript.

  • A Microsoft Word or Google Docs file with light Track Changes markup containing minimal editing suggestions and detailed sidebar comments with thoughts, perceptions, questions, etc.

  • An approximately 10-20 page letter summarizing the feedback with suggestions on how to approach revision for your next draft.

Developmental editing is a big picture review of your book; I do not provide line editing, copyediting, proofreading, alpha, beta or gamma reading, or ghostwriting services. Read about my editing style.

Manuscript Evaluation and Base Quote

$65.00, nonrefundable


Manuscripts of the same length can require different levels of time and attention. For example, a manuscript in its first draft, or a manuscript containing heavy language or grammatical issues, will take more time than one that has undergone several revisions already. This is why I do not recommend submitting a first draft of your manuscript for developmental editing. Ask (honest) friends, writing groups, etc. for their feedback, revise your work, and then seek a developmental editor.


To provide an adequate quote, I will test edit a random 1,000-word section from the middle of your manuscript to determine 1) if I am a good fit for your needs, and 2) the amount of time I can expect to spend reading through and providing you feedback. Once I am done evaluating this section, I will provide you with the base cost and my estimated time to complete. Regardless of whether or not you decide to move forward with me, I will also provide you with feedback for the section I reviewed. Should you choose to work with me after receiving your base quote, the cost of this evaluation will be counted as a down payment and deducted from the total cost of the project.

What to Expect

There are a few details to iron out before we start our collaboration. Below you'll find an overview of what happens after you first submit your inquiry.

Step 1: Send your inquiry.

First, you will fill out a form with general information about your manuscript. This will allow me to get a sense of whether or not I am the right editor for your project. If I don’t think I am, I will tell you here so that you don’t waste time or money on the manuscript evaluation.

Step 2: Manuscript evaluation.

If I think I would be a good fit for your project, I will email you with a form detailing the evaluation process and will request your full manuscript for evaluation. I will never share your manuscript with anyone.


The manuscript evaluation requires an upfront, nonrefundable payment of $65. If you decide to move forward after this stage, the $65 will be counted as a down payment toward the full cost of editing your project.


Once I receive your manuscript and payment, I will select a random 1,000-word section to test edit. I will read through this and offer comments just as I would if I read the full manuscript. This will allow me to get a sense of where the writing is at and how much time it will take me to go through your work.

Step 3: Review quote and time to complete.

When I have finished the manuscript evaluation, I will return my feedback to you along with a base cost for the project, an estimated time to complete, and a tentative delivery date based on other projects in my queue. Note that the actual delivery date will vary based on when payment is received.


If you decide not to move forward with me as your editor, you will have my feedback from the test edit to keep and use as you wish.


If you do decide to move forward with me as your editor, I will ask if you wish to include any add-ons, such as a Zoom call or additional readthrough, before finalizing your invoice. Note that you may select and pay for additional services later.

Step 4: Payment

Because I must block my schedule in order to read and respond to your manuscript, I require payment in full before I begin. 


This will be your base cost plus any add-ons, minus the $65 manuscript evaluation fee. I accept payment through Venmo or via old-fashioned check. Details of how to pay will be provided.

Step 5: It Begins!

Once I receive payment and it has cleared (if paying by check), I will begin review of your manuscript. You are welcome to reach out to me with any questions as you wait, but please know that I will only provide feedback once I have completed my full readthrough.
